Parental legacy: reputation and education

Along the way, I’ve come to realize there are two big things parents can leave their children. It’s not money, property, cars or a big house. The two most precious things parents leave behind are their reputation and an education.

I’ve met people who got my respect by default the moment I found out who their parents were. “Oh, you’re Mr. A’s kid? Amazing!” That kind of reputation isn’t really about fame or talent. It’s mostly about how their parents treated people: how they lived with dedication, responsibility and generosity, and earned everyone’s trust.

And I’ve rarely regretted giving that “default respect.”

It’s even better when your parents pack you a good education to carry through life. Education isn’t just about learning facts. It’s also ethics, skills, a sense of responsibility and a lot more. A good education is a great launchpad for the future.

The luckiest thing is to have “authentic” parents and a good education. But if you didn’t get that, don’t be sad. The second kind of luck is becoming that kind of parent yourself.
