Through the passage of time and contemplative journeys, I have come to understand the two most profound legacies parents can leave to their children. It is not about leaving wealth, assets, vehicles, or structures. Instead, the most treasured gifts from parents are reputation and education.
So far, I have met people whose parents, when revealed inadvertently, elicits immediate respect. “Are you Mr. A’s child? Awesome!” This reverence may stem not only from their parents’ prominence or talent, but also from the way they treated others—embracing lives of dedication, accountability, selflessness, and a dignified rapport with people.
I rarely have reason to reconsider my initial regard for them, as the “default respect.”
The beauty of this scenario is enhanced when parents lay a solid educational foundation for their children’s future. Education encompasses ethics, competencies, responsibility, and a variety of virtues in addition to knowledge acquisition. A solid education is a powerful springboard to the future.
Fortune truly favors those who have both “authentic” parents and a comprehensive education. Don’t be disheartened if such fortune hasn’t already come your way. The second stroke of luck comes in the form of becoming such parents yourself.
Bố mẹ để lại gì cho con?
Trên những hành trình đã đi qua, mình nhận ra hai thứ lớn nhất mà bố mẹ có thể để lại cho con cái. Không phải tiền bạc, cơ ngơi, xe hơi hay nhà lầu. Hai thứ quý nhất mà bố mẹ để lại là danh tiếng và giáo dục.
Mình đã gặp những người, khi mà vô tình biết bố mẹ của họ là ai, mình lập tức có sự tôn trọng mặc định. “Cháu là con của ông A sao? Tuyệt vời!”. Danh tiếng ấy không hẳn là ở sự nổi tiếng hay tài năng, mà nằm nhiều ở cách bố mẹ đối nhân xử thế; cách họ đã sống một cuộc đời tận tuỵ, trách nhiệm, vị tha, uy tín như thế nào với mọi người.
Mình cũng ít khi hối hận vì “sự tôn trọng mặc định” đã cho đi lúc đầu.
Sẽ tuyệt vời hơn nếu được bố mẹ chuẩn bị cho một hành trang giáo dục vừa vặn để mang theo trên đường đời. Giáo dục không giới hạn ở việc học kiến thức, nó còn là đạo đức, kĩ năng, tinh thần trách nhiệm hay nhiều thứ khác. Một nền tảng giáo dục tốt là bệ phóng tuyệt vời vào tương lai.
Điều may mắn nhất chính là có được bố mẹ “authentic” và có nền tảng giáo dục tốt. Nhưng nếu bạn chưa có, đừng buồn. Bởi vì điều may mắn thứ hai chính là hãy trở thành những bậc cha mẹ như vậy.
